MAJOR SPORTS EVENTS
Durham has served as host to a number of premier sports events throughout its history, including ACC and NCAA tournaments, the NC Special Olympics, and USTA league events. To give planners insight into the possibilities in Durham, below are highlights from several events Durham has hosted in the past:
The United States Women's Curling Association will bring its National Meeting and National Championship competition to Durham over the course of six days. The event will be hosted by the Triangle Curling Club in Durham.
Hosted by the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in 2015 and 2016, the ACC selected Durham to host the event due to the facility and its proximity to hotels and amenities. The multi-day event brought fans from across the nation to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, a top minor league facility in the middle of downtown.
In 2014, the Triple-A All-Star Game and festivities took place in Durham at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Over the course of five days, there were 12 separate events, including a home run derby and food truck rodeo, attracting a grand total of more than 25,000 people.
Sponsored by the Durham Striders Track Club, this official USA Track and Field event includes races and events for youth from around the country from ages eight and under up to 18. It has been held at the Durham County Memorial Stadium a number of times, dating back to 2000.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) brought its mixed doubles league event to Durham on many occasions, most recently in 2010. The tournament was held at nine venues throughout the county, including the Duke Faculty Club and the Hollow Rock Racquet and Swim Club.
