On Thursday, June 13, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) announced that they have selected Durham to host their 2025-2027 Football Championship. There were several other top-tier cities in the running to host the championships, including Charlotte, North Carolina and Salem, Virginia, making the win a bigger point of pride for the city and reinforcing Durham as a championship hub. This spirit of triumph is sure to translate to the atmosphere of the event as our Durham community comes together to cheer on the exceptional student-athletes striving towards victory.

Here’s what some of Durham’s leaders had to say about the big win for the city!

“As I like to say, ‘Durham is dope,’ and we look forward to welcoming the CIAA, along with fans and visitors alike, back for the return of this exciting event and to experience our city. We’re ready to ‘roll out the red carpet’ so to speak and can’t wait for everyone to be a part of our city’s rich culture, hospitality, and zeal for sports.”
Leonardo "Leo" Williams
Mayor of Durham
“I am absolutely thrilled that we have the opportunity to host the CIAA Football Championship! The Durham Sports Commission team worked diligently on this bid to bring more CIAA events to Durham. This is a special victory for me as the CIAA was so instrumental in developing my career in college athletics. The opportunity for our youth in Durham to be exposed to the amazing universities of the CIA is invaluable, providing them with inspiration and a vision of what they can achieve in their future academic and athletic pursuits. ”
Dr. Ingrid Wicker McCree
Durham Sports Commission Board Chair
“There certainly is a buzzing level of support and excitement about Durham hosting the CIAA Football Championships. We are ready and eager to put on a world-class event, aligned with the CIAA’s strategic plan components of building value, championing character, increasing the public’s knowledge of the conference’s rich legacy. As a proud Elizabeth City State and North Carolina Central University alum, I am so very proud and very much looking forward to the City showing up and showing out in 2025 and beyond.”
Zack Hawkins
NC State Representative House District 31
“We are immensely proud to have won the bid to host the CIAA Football Championship in Durham. Our team put in many hours to craft a competitive bid, and I’m very honored to be the Host Committee Executive Director. We’re dedicated to showcasing our vibrant community here in Durham, while also celebrating diversity and creating an unforgettable experience for fans, spectators, and student-athletes.”
Kaila'Shea Menendez
Durham Sports Commission Deputy Director

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Board of Directors voted last week to approve Durham, NC as the site of the CIAA Football Championship starting in 2025 through 2027.  The championship will be hosted by the Durham Sports Commission, with Durham County Memorial Stadium (DCMS) as the event’s selected venue.

Bids were also submitted by the cities of Charlotte, NC and Salem, VA.  The Board reviewed several factors in its decision to move to Durham, including facility use and staffing, team support, opportunities for community engagement, and involvement of the local business community.

“Durham has a great history with this event and we are immensely proud to once again be hosting the CIAA Football Championship in Durham,” said Marcus Manning, Executive Director of the Durham Sports Commission. “We’re dedicated to showcasing our vibrant community here in Durham, while also celebrating diversity and creating an unforgettable experience for fans, spectators, and student-athletes.”

The football championship has been held at DCMS previously from 2008-2012 and 2014-2015, pulling in crowds of over 10,000 fans.  The CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship is hosted by the Durham Sports Commission at the same venue, in accordance with a three-year agreement that commenced in 2023 and will run through 2025.  CIAA-member Shaw University currently hosts its home football and soccer games at the venue.

Durham County Memorial Stadium is an all-star venue located just minutes from lodging, restaurants, and everything else that makes the City of Champions so unique. The facility has the capacity to accommodate plenty of tailgating and cultivate the passionate atmosphere CIAA fanbases are known to bring. The Durham Sports Commission is committed to stewarding Durham’s passion for sports and to bring DCMS to life during the CIAA Football Championships, all the while helping to fulfill the CIAA’s vision for supporting student-athletes and uplifting community relationships..

Salem, VA has been the home of the CIAA championship since 2017, and it is commended for its expertise and a job well done for not only CIAA championships for the past 7 years, but its their celebration in 2023 for hosting over 100 years of NCAA championships.

The transition back to Durham provides an opportunity to further grow the football championship and highlight the CIAA’s mission including Leadership, Legacy and Community.

“The CIAA looks forward to returning to Durham County Memorial Stadium,” exclaimed Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams.  “Our recent media rights partnership with HBCU Go gives us the opportunity to showcase our top teams in a centralized location, again where the football championship has thrived in the past.  The CIAA will have an opportunity to engage in the community beyond the game in a way that supports the mission of the conference.”

America’s past time. Forever part of Durham’s culture and identify. Baseball has long been a part of our identity. In 1902, the Durham Tobacconists first took the field. From the 1920s to 1963, Durham had three Negro League teams compete, including most notably the Durham Black Sox. In 1988, the Academy Award nominated Kevin Costner film Bull Durham helped put the Durham Bulls in the national spotlight. And Durham has never looked back. Today, the Durham Bulls Athletic Park is one of Durham’s biggest visitor attractions and local favorites. You can’t just use the slogan “World Famous for Fun” like the Bulls do without walking the walk, right? Besides, you know, winning every championship there is to win.

The Greatest Show in Sports

On April 12-14, 2024, the Savannah Bananas will return to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park for the second time to take on the Party Animals. The three game series is a part of their nationwide Banana Ball World Tour, playing in Minor League and Major League Stadiums across the country.

Bananas games, referred to as Banana Ball, are designed to provide fans with a fast paced, high-octane and entertainment focused experience. From choreographed dance routines to a fan catching a foul ball counting as an out, Banana Ball is designed for baseball and non-baseball fans alike. The Durham Sports Commission is proud to sponsor this electrifying weekend of baseball.

The Durham Sports Commission is proud to have worked with the Bulls over the years on bids to bring more baseball to Durham and look forward to continuing to do so in the future.

Durham also set the record for the highest attended ACC game with a single-game attendance of 11,329 back in 2013. Durham’s central location to the Atlantic Coast Conference schools allows for fans to pack the DBAP for exhilarating championship baseball.

With a Winning Combination of Heritage, History, Hospitality and High-Caliber Facilities, Durham is Hopeful for the Event’s Return

Durham, NC (March 18, 2024) –The Durham Sports Commission (DSC), a leader in local sports-based initiatives and conduit for positive social and economic impact in Durham and the surrounding region, is excited to announce it has formally submitted a bid to host the 2025, 2026 and 2027 CIAA Football Championships once again at the Durham County Memorial Stadium.

“We are thrilled not only for the opportunity to host such an amazing event, but also for others to experience what the City of Champions is all about,” said Kaila’Shea Menendez, Deputy Director of the Durham Sports Commission and potential Host Committee Executive Director. “Our team worked relentlessly to produce a competitive bid that showcases the vibrancy, energy, and sports culture in our city. Collaborating with the CIAA is always a pleasure, and we look forward to the opportunity to work alongside the conference office to host one-of-a-kind championships in the near future.”

One of the Durham Sports Commission’s key goals has been to transform Durham into a championship hub. Bidding on the upcoming CIAA Football Championships is the next step in the unrelenting pursuit of this goal and comes off the back of several other key milestones achieved in this vein. The DSC has successfully hosted the NAIA Football National Championship for three years in a row and just announced that the ACC Baseball Championship will be returning to Durham in 2025, 2027 and 2029 following 13 years of immense success. Other bids that have recently been won by the city are the 2025 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championships and 2029 World University Games, proving Durham is more than capable of carrying on the legacy of the CIAA Football Championships for years to come.

“As retired Director of Athletics at North Carolina Central University (NCCU), I know better than most that the success of the university was built on the foundational greatness instilled as a CIAA member institution for over 70 years, over more than half of the university’s existence,” said Ingrid Wicker McCree, Ed.D., Board Chair at the Durham Sports Commission. “Just ten minutes from my previous home at NCCU, Durham County Memorial Stadium is the perfect backdrop for the pinnacle of many student-athletes’ careers and our Eagle community, new and old, will surely embrace this event, excitedly cheering on from the stands.”

If Durham is selected, the championships will be held at Durham County Memorial Stadium, home field to the CIAA’s Shaw Football. The tournament was previously held at this location from 2008-2012 and 2014-2015, drawing more than 10,000 fans in 2011, nearing a conference record at the time.

“The 8,500-seat multipurpose Durham County Memorial Stadium is the city’s premier sports venue and ideal place to hold the championship, especially given the recent major renovations including new synthetic grass pitch, video scoreboard, and sound system,” said Dr. Kimberly Sowell, Durham County Manager. “The stadium has continued to maintain its reputation as an all-star venue, just minutes from lodging, restaurants, and everything else Durham has to offer. The World University Games and other national governing bodies have already opted in on us, and we hope the CIAA will continue to do so as well.”

Durham is the ideal city to host the championship. The Triangle area is rich with several HBCUs in Shaw University, Saint Augustine’s University and North Carolina Central University. Additionally, Durham is centrally located to other CIAA institutions, three hours closer to CIAA headquarters than the championship’s previous home, and has a proven track record of success hosting this event with sellout crowds.

“As Mayor, this city is my workplace, my family, and my home,” said Mayor Leonardo “Leo” Williams. “Back in 2005, as a proud member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Head Drum Major of the Sound Machine at North Carolina Central University, I experienced the exhilaration of victory as the Eagles claimed the CIAA Football Championship win amidst a roaring crowd of 10,580 at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium. That same electrifying energy, fueled by the passion of the CIAA’s devoted fanbase and their commitment to excellence, is what I eagerly anticipate sharing with a new generation of Durham residents.”

The bid to host the 2025, 2026 and 2027 CIAA Football Championship was due on Friday, March 15. The announcement of the winning city is slated for May 2024. For more information on this and other exciting Durham sporting events, please visit durhamncsports.com.

ESPN announced that College Gameday is heading to Durham for Duke’s matchup with #11 ranked Notre Dame. The Blue Devils are off to a historic 4-0 start to the season, including their first win against a Top 10 opponent since 1989 and their highest AP Ranking (17) since 1994.

While the basketball equivalent has been to Duke more than any other school, this will be the first time since they took their show on the road in 1993 that the College GameDay crew will make their way to Durham for football. Celebrating its 36th year, GameDay is a college football staple that averages 2.2 million viewers every Saturday morning.

The iconic pregame show goes beyond the football analysis and trademark fan created signs. College GameDay not only brings attention to the team and to Duke University, it also provides a platform for Durham to showcase its spirit and its culture. It’s a testament to Head Coach Mike Elko and the Duke student-athletes for all their hard work in making Saturday a historic day for Durham and for Duke.

GameDay Details

College GameDay starts at 9:00 a.m. and runs until the first games of the day kick-off at noon. It will be held in Abele Quad in front of Duke Chapel. Parking opens at 6:00 a.m. and the GameDay gates open at 6:30 a.m. You won’t want to miss this historic day in Durham. Check out the full schedule for the day here.

If you are visiting from out of town for what is undoubtedly going to be an exciting day for Durham, check out this webpage with information on where to stay in Durham.

And if you can’t make it to the game, but want to be a part of the excitement, check out this blog post on the top sports bars in Durham.

GameDay Recap

While the game didn’t turn out the way we wanted, the Blue Devils fought hard, falling to the Fighting Irish 21-14 in the final seconds late on Saturday night. Despite the loss on the field, it was a victory of a day for the program, Duke University and for Durham.

According to ESPN PR, an average of 1,683,000 viewers and 2.2 million in the final hour tuned in to watch the 4,500 fans packed into Abell Quad. From Head Coach Mike Elko, to Durham’s Moe’s Original BBQ, to the hilarious Ken Jeong, the GameDay experience in Durham was clearly a hit. But that’s no surprise.

On top of that, ESPN PR also announced 5.5 million viewers tuned into the game on Saturday night. Not only was it the highest viewed game on the ESPN family of networks on Saturday, but it was the most viewed ABC Saturday Night Football game of the season so far. If that wasn’t enough, the 40,768 fans packed into a sold out Wallace Wade Stadium marks the highest attendance since 1989.

Safe to say all eyes in the sports world were on Durham on Saturday. We plan on keeping it that way.

Bid Symposium

On Tuesday, August 29th, the Durham Sports Commission traveled to Indianapolis for the 2026-2028 NCAA Bid Cycle Host Symposium. The DSC staff, along with Board Chair Dr. Ingrid Wicker McCree, joined hundreds of representatives from across the country at the NCAA headquarters to learn what the NCAA is looking for in bids to host their future national championships.

The morning began with an introductory meeting where the DSC heard from multiple NCAA representatives, including NCAA President Charlie Baker.

Throughout the day, the DSC team members attended various championship-specific break-out sessions. These included Division I, II and III men’s lacrosse, women’s gymnastics, and Division II and Division II Festival, amongst others. They also met and spoke with multiple championship managers positioned throughout the building. Through these interactions, the DSC formed strong connections with the NCAA representatives involved.

The team also visited the NCAA Hall of Champions, honoring all current and past NCAA champions across all sports.

The symposium provided great information and clarity on what the different championships are looking for in potential hosts and highlighted items to focus on in each bid. The sessions placed a large emphasis on creating a memorable student-athlete experience and community support, specifically finding ways to incorporate diverse businesses into the overall experience.

“Our trip to the Bid Symposium was a great opportunity to prepare ourselves for the upcoming bid cycle. We are confident in Durham as a host for future NCAA events and are excited to continue to grow Durham as a Championship Hub.” – Executive Director Marcus Manning

The team is excited to showcase Durham throughout the bid process. We believe the passion for sports and unwavering community support makes Durham the perfect fit to host future NCAA Championships. Bid submissions are due this upcoming February, and host locations will be announced in October of 2024.

Grand Park Sports Campus

The next day, the team headed north of Indianapolis to Westfield, Indiana to tour Grand Park Sports Campus. Grand Park’s Matthew Trnian and Rachel Nelson toured the team around the complex and provided valuable insights. The tour included a look inside the multi-purpose events center, 31 multi-purpose turf and grass fields, and 26 baseball diamonds. The team learned about maintaining a large-scale facility and the positive economic impact it has on the surrounding area.

Additionally, the September 13-15 Inter-City Visit to Indianapolis hosted by Discover Durham, Downtown Durham, Inc., the DSC, and the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce featured Grand Park. The over 70 business leaders, elected officials and additional Durham stakeholders in attendance visited and learned about Grand Park’s success and how we can continue to accelerate sports and tourism in Durham.

We remain focused on learning how to continue to make Durham a sports destination both today and in the future. We know that bringing championship-level events to Durham will continue to provide positive social and economic impact for our community.
