Nestled in East Durham, Hillandale Golf Course is the oldest public golf facility in the area. It was originally established in 1911 through the generosity of John Sprunt Hill, with the first nine holes designed by Donald Ross and the back nine by Perry Maxwell. In 1960-61, the course was relocated and redesigned by George Cobb.
Today, Hillandale offers an accessible and challenging par-71 layout that stretches from about 4,954 yards (forward tees) to 6,339 yards (back tees), making it suitable for golfers of all skill levels. Amenities include a full driving range, expansive putting and wedge practice areas, a pro shop with club fitting services, and public lessons through PGA certified instructors.
Hillandale is not just about golf, it’s also deeply rooted in the community. It hosts signature local tournaments like the Durham Amateur Championship, the City Golf Classic, and a Junior Golf Invitational; and it supports charitable and youth-oriented programs such as The First Tee, SwingPals, and the H.E.A.R.T.S. Club (which provides experiences for pediatric transplant patients and their families).
